A beautiful mind.

چکیده
John Forbes Nash, Jr. was a child prodigy. While other boys his age were playing childhood games in their hometown of Bluefield, West Virginia, John was reading E.T. Bell’s Men of Mathematics. Learning more at home than he did at school, the young lad (who was encouraged by his educated parents) was able to solve some of math’s most difficult problems. Accepting a full-ride fellowship to Princeton University, John Nash was surrounded by some of the best and brightest people working in mathematics and science at the time. Undaunted by the brilliance of people like Albert Einstein, the blossoming genius followed his own path. When he was 21, Nash wrote a doctoral thesis that eventually made him a Nobel Laureate. But that Nobel Prize came decades after most people had either written off John Nash or thought he was dead. What caused people to think such a thing? The words of Nash himself best describe the unraveling of his brilliant mind: ...the staff at my university, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology [where he was teaching], and later all of Boston were behaving strangely towards me...I started to see crypto-communists everywhere...I started to think I was a man of great religious importance, and to hear voices all the time. I began to hear something like telephone calls in my head, from people opposed to my ideas...The delirium was like a dream, from which I seemed never to awake.

Beauty and Art. Cognitive Function, Evolution, and Mathematical Models of the Mind
– The paper discusses relationships between aesthetics theory and mathematical models of mind. hierarchy of the mind and evolution of these abilities. The knowledge instinct is the foundation of higher mental abilities and aesthetic emotions. Aesthetic emotions are present in every act of perception and cognition, and at the top of the mind hierarchy they become emotions of the beautiful. The l...
متن کاملSapience, Consciousness, and the Knowledge Instinct (prolegomena to a Physical Theory)
The chapter describes a mathematical theory of sapience and consciousness: higher mental abilities including abilities for concepts, emotions, instincts, understanding, imagination, intuition, beautiful, and sublime. The knowledge instinct drives our understanding of the world. Aesthetic emotions, our needs for beautiful and sublime are related to the knowledge instinct. I briefly discuss neuro...
متن کاملMy Beautiful Genome Lone Frank Oneworld Publications, 2011: Shopping for a soft sweater and a comfy pair of genes
Having recently finished watching the first season of Forbrydelsen (The Killing) I know something about Scandinavian knitwear. As the protagonist of this Danish TV thriller, Sarah Lund, doggedly solves a murder case, she is continuously huddling into a thick, cosy, snowflake sweater (there is even a website dedicated to this knitted garment). The traditional Scandinavian sweater is a useful ima...

The chapters on psychology and sociology present a very biased analysis of these fields. The emphasis is always on what he chooses to call the "mysteries" that have arisen in these fields. The implication is that living things in general, and man in particular, while a material object is, at the same time, subject to laws not applicable in the nonliving world. He intimates that these "supernatu...
متن کاملCan Physics Provide a Theory of Consciousness?: A review of Roger Penrose's "Shadows of the Mind"
1.1 Physics is surely the most beautiful of the sciences, and it is esthetically tempting to suppose that two of the great scientific mysteries we confront today, observer effects in quantum mechanics and conscious experience, are in fact the same. Roger Penrose is an admirable contributor to modern physics and mathematics, and his new book, Shadows of the Mind (SOTM) offers us some brilliant i...
متن کاملThe Beauty of Mathematics – A Rough Sketch for a Proof
Mathematics and the aesthetics enjoy a long history of mutual references, which may be explained by the fact that both domains are dealing with relations: structure, content, schemata and (dis)similarity (cf. Wechsler 1978). And beauty? Beauty is the experience of pleasure and amazement from something that is aesthetic. Although “theorems and proofs which are agreed upon to be beautiful are rar...
